For a southern exposure foundation, consider a landscape design featuring a mix of low-maintenance perennials like small Coreopsis or Creeping Sedum in the foreground, transitioning to medium-height plants like Daylily and Compact Grass, and finally adding taller varieties such as garden Phlox and Coneflower nearer to the house - intersperse with flowering shrubs like Hydrangea, Weigela and Compact Spirea.

Expanding to a larger area allows for more diversity. Continue with a border of low perennials, to medium height plants and then taller perennials. Accentuate a corner with a small tee or large shrub such as a Lilac tree or Burning Bush.
